I recently read a book about theories of writing that led me to think it was smart to assume our real-world write-processing skills are fundamentally as good as our virtual ones. That view is not uncommon. But I find no support whatsoever for starting to push our own ability to write to the limits of our characters. That’s not what makes characters so great—just that they are as good now as they were yesterday. I will explain why this is not the case.

    The author of the book, Leigh Hunt, lends her opinion in an extensively researched interview with Wired, with over 75 percent of her answers coming from writing—not talking to anybody. From her interview:

    I think for books and film and television, most people just react in a pattern. Take the famous film Noah, and it has a story and characters that have been told before. You have the characters in the past. You then add to that the characters the person who’s creating them. They are all imperfect, so the reader then takes things in, and then gives them readership. And then they stack on top of each other and go on with their lives. It’s like a tree of stories. But just because every single tree has a forest, it doesn’t mean that those stories and characters are good and the readers are good—they’re all trees.

    Did you learn anything from reading these books?

    I feel like the writers and the actors and the directors are trying to make you feel like you’re in control. But you have to be gentle with them. I think the real psychology of writers is that sometimes they have to do that thing where you’ve got to unlearn the person that’s behind the character. The chapter on newspaper clippings is an amazing tale of that. I mean, these people wrote newspaper clipping stories for years without ever actually being read. The reader is the mouthpiece, and the audience of a newspaper clip is the audience. I want to say, “Hey, I’m that guy, hey, see, I write for Mother Jones” —but on the last page of the newspaper clipped story, my face changes to grim purpose.

    Creativity with students is one of the most challenging aspects of teaching. It is still important to develop and maintain this teaching quality. It only becomes possible when the students develop a coherently developing theory of writing.

    One of the first steps to develop a theory of communications is the definition of what is a communication and what is an expression.

    Understanding the importance of teaching your writing

    Authors choose who they work with through what they learn about the author. Most authors choose how to write, on the basis of what the author does well. Others don’t read very much. With that in mind, it makes sense that the authors want to write what works best for their readers.

    Early in my career, I became interested in cultural anthropology. I would have done better by reading classic works such as Ibsen, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Arthur C. Clarke. The strongest part of this is the content, for the strength of the work depends on what the works are about. At the same time, we do not live in a mauve fantasy world. We move through our lives in reality, and the authors write from that. I think most authors will prefer more impactful works than more abstract. The more impactive the works, the better the readers will remember them.

    I found this interesting and I asked a professor how we gain power through experience. The professor thought it was very important for us to gain experience in the things we want to accomplish. He said that people may not make the best decisions because they are in imperfect position to learn what works well for them. Therefore, we must have many teachings in place to help us learn how to do well. He also said that as a writer, you will need that many teaching exercises you cannot all get from one teacher. The teacher must not overcome him by any means. He told me that when we do poorly, we learn a lesson about ourselves and resolve to continue to improve.

Playing and earns these points depending on how well a player plays, and what kind of equipment they choose to buy. This system is fairly disciplined, with skill rewarding the player with more experience points when they achieve more levels, and healing them with more health. Play at the boundaries of skill gives it its own life, with an emphasis on reward for being a good player.
